Why More Parents Are Struggling to Secure IEP Support
Across the United States, more families are experiencing conflict with schools about their child’s IEP. This concern reflects a real trend. Reports show a noticeable increase in special education complaints and due process filings in recent years.
One key factor involves staffing shortages. Nearly every state reports difficulty hiring and retaining qualified special education teachers and service providers. When staffing gaps exist, services may be delayed or delivered inconsistently, which directly affects students and families.
At the same time, families are navigating a system with less consistent federal oversight. Some experts note that parents now carry more responsibility when they seek enforcement of their child’s rights under IDEA. This shift can create inequities, especially for families without access to advocacy or legal support.
These challenges raise important questions for parents. Are services being delivered as written in the IEP? Is progress clearly documented and shared? Should another IEP meeting be requested?
You do not need to navigate these questions alone. The EPN Collective is here to support, equip, and walk alongside families as they advocate for their children. When systems feel overwhelming, connection and guidance can make a meaningful difference.
Your voice matters, and together we can pursue better outcomes for every child.
