Understanding Your Role in Your Child’s Education Plan

For many parents of children with disabilities, the world of special education can feel overwhelming at first. There are meetings, documents, and new terminology to learn. However, one of the most important things to remember is that parents are essential partners in their child’s education. The goal of special education is to ensure that every child receives the support they need to learn and grow in school. Empowering Parents Network was created to help families gain the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate this process and advocate for their children.

One important concept parents often encounter is an Individualized Education Program. An Individualized Education Program is a written plan developed for a child who needs specialized instruction because of a disability. This plan outlines the child’s educational goals and the services the school will provide to help the child succeed. It is created by a team that includes teachers, school specialists, and the child’s parents. The plan is reviewed at least once a year to ensure it continues to meet the child’s needs.

Parents have an important role in this process. They have the right to attend meetings, review school records, and participate in decisions about their child’s services. Parents can also ask questions, request evaluations, and share insights about their child’s strengths and challenges. These rights exist so that families can work together with schools to support student success.

If you are new to special education, start by learning about the basics of the Individualized Education Program process. Helpful introductory articles include “IEP Rights Explained: What Every Parent and Educator Should Know” from The Arc and “The IEP Process: Step-by-Step Guide for Parents” from Special Needs USA. These resources explain the process in clear language and provide practical steps for parents preparing for meetings and advocating for their children.

At Empowering Parents Network, we believe knowledge builds confidence. When parents understand the process and their rights, they are better equipped to support their child’s educational journey. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at info@empoweringparentsnetwork.org
