Growing with Purpose: Building a Stronger Future for Families

One of the greatest privileges of leading Empowering Parents Network is having the opportunity to dream alongside the families we serve.

Every conversation with a parent, every community partnership, and every opportunity to learn reinforces why this work matters. While much of what happens behind the scenes may not always be visible, each step is taken with one purpose in mind: creating more opportunities, more support, and more hope for families raising children with disabilities.

Over the past several months, we have been working toward goals that will allow Empowering Parents Network to expand in meaningful ways.

One exciting milestone has been securing a fiscal sponsor. This important partnership creates new opportunities to pursue grant funding that can support educational workshops, parent programs, community resources, and future initiatives designed to strengthen families. While grants are never guaranteed, having the ability to seek funding opens doors that simply were not available; especially in the realm of engaging with underserved populations and rural communities.

At the same time, we have been developing relationships with organizations throughout California, Nevada, and Montana. Strong partnerships allow communities to work together rather than in isolation. By collaborating with schools, nonprofit organizations, disability agencies, and community leaders, we hope to make quality information, education, and support more accessible to families who need it most.

Perhaps one of the most personal milestones has been beginning work on my first book. For many years, I have wanted to write about what it truly means to become an exceptional special education professional. My hope is simple. I hope it becomes a book that professionals return to throughout their careers. A book that reminds experienced educators why they entered this profession and encourages those who are just beginning their journey. Most importantly, I hope it honors the children, families, and professionals whose lives have shaped my own.

These projects may appear different on the surface, but they all share the same foundation. They are about relationships. They are about building communities where families feel supported rather than alone. They are about creating opportunities for children to thrive.

Research consistently reminds us that strong family partnerships improve outcomes for children. Family Voices, a national organization dedicated to family-centered care, emphasizes that when families are respected as partners and supported with meaningful information and resources, children and youth with special healthcare needs experience stronger systems of care and better opportunities for success. Their work reinforces a principle that has always guided Empowering Parents Network: when families are empowered, children benefit.

As I reflect on where Empowering Parents Network is today, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the parents who continue to trust us. Gratitude for the professionals who believe in collaboration. Gratitude for the organizations that are willing to partner alongside us. And gratitude for the opportunity to continue growing together.

Every workshop we hope to offer. Every partnership we establish. Every grant we pursue. Every page that is written. It all begins with one belief. Families deserve to feel informed. Families deserve to feel supported. Families deserve to know they are never walking this journey alone.

Parent Reflection Question

Who has made a meaningful difference in your family's journey, and how has that relationship reminded you that you do not have to walk this path alone?
