Finding Hope in the Journey: Faith, Advocacy, and the Strength of Autism Moms By Tiara Brown When my son, Kendal, was diagnosed with autism, I found myself stepping into a world I never expected. As a single mom, I experienced fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and moments of wondering if I was enough. Like many parents of children with special needs, I quickly realized that this journey can feel both beautiful and incredibly lonely. Through every challenge, my faith became my anchor. There were days when I didn't have the answers, but I learned that I didn't have to walk this journey alone. God reminded me that strength isn't about having everything figured out. It's about trusting Him one day at a time. Those quiet moments of prayer gave me the courage to keep showing up for my son and to celebrate every victory, no matter how small. Kendal has taught me more about patience, resilience, unconditional love, and joy than I ever imagined. Whether it's a new skill, a successful outing, or simply a peaceful day, I've learned to treasure the milestones that others might overlook. Every step forward is worth celebrating. That perspective inspired me to create my Faith & Autism community online. My hope is to encourage parents who may feel overwhelmed, unseen, or discouraged. I want them to know they are not alone. Our stories matter, our children matter, and our faith can carry us through even the hardest seasons. I also wrote Faith When Life Feels Heavy, a devotional created to encourage anyone walking through difficult circumstances, and I created a Faith & Autism Prayer Journal (coming soon) to help parents find comfort, hope, and peace through prayer. If there is one message I hope readers take away, it is this: don't lose hope. Progress may look different for every child, but every step forward matters. Give yourself grace, celebrate the small victories, and remember that asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. No matter where you are in your journey, know this: God sees you, He loves your child, and He is walking beside you every step of the way. A Moment for Parents Breathe By Shanjida Hoq, MHC, M.S. Ed. Parents of children with special needs often move through their days carrying an extraordinary number of responsibilities. There are decisions to make, appointments to manage, school concerns to address, and the everyday needs of family life. It can become so normal to keep moving from one responsibility to the next that parents may not recognize how long they have been operating without a moment to pause. Sometimes that experience can feel like holding your breath. Stress builds, thoughts begin to race, and even a relatively small challenge can feel more difficult because so much is already being carried. In those moments, something as simple as intentionally stopping and breathing can create a little space between what is happening and how we respond. One strategy that can be helpful is called box breathing. Take a slow breath in for four seconds. Hold for four seconds. Breathe out slowly for four seconds, and then pause for four seconds before beginning again. Repeating this pattern for several cycles provides an opportunity to slow down, focus on the present moment, and allow your body and mind a brief period of calm. That pause can be especially valuable during stressful moments. When frustration rises, our first response may not always reflect what we want to communicate. Giving ourselves a few moments to breathe can help us move from reacting out of frustration toward responding with greater clarity. It does not remove the challenge in front of us, but it can give us a little more room to decide how we want to approach it. Parents also need more than individual strategies for managing difficult moments. We need connection. Finding other families who understand some of the same challenges can make the journey feel less isolating. There is comfort in being able to talk with someone who understands without requiring a lengthy explanation. Those relationships can remind us that although each family's experience is unique, we do not have to navigate every part of it alone. So, in the middle of the appointments, meetings, decisions, advocacy, and everyday responsibilities, give yourself permission to pause. Take a breath. Allow yourself a moment before moving on to whatever comes next. Caring for yourself does not require stepping away from your responsibilities. Sometimes it begins with something as simple as taking the next breath intentionally.
